The West Midlands Regional Council Delegates invaded the BBC TV and Radio station of the West Midlands to distribute the NPC pensions leaflets, upon the 6th April, and joined forces with a DARLEK to exterminate any disillusions regarding the necessity of maintaining and improving the State Pension. Also to highlight that after 100 years 1 in 4 older people are living below the official poverty line. It was stressed that the NPC was calling upon the Government to immediately raise the state pension to at least the governments defined poverty level of £165 and to increase it yearly in line with the average wage rises or inflation, whichever is the greater. The delegates then proceeded to the BRMB offices to give a collective interview highlighting the plight of pensioners, mainly women surviving on a half state pension of £57.14 per week against today's inflationary costs and that tomorrows pensioners would be considerably less well of in value, if indeed state pension is paid at all. The West Midlands Pensioners Convention will be extending the demands for improved pensions at their Pensioners Demonstration and Rally to be held in Victoria Square Birmingham from 12.00noon to 2.00pm on Saturday the 18th April 2009. at which there will be various prominent speakers including at least two local MP's.
